The Facts on STDs

A sexually transmitted disease, also known as a STD, is an infection contracted through sexual or intimate contact such as vaginal or anal intercourse or oral sex. STDs are now commonly being called STIs, or sexually transmitted infections. In the past, sexually transmitted diseases were known as veneral diseases or VDs. Some common STDs include genital herpes, HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and genital warts. Most STDs are transmitted through the mucus membranes of the penis, vulva, and less commonly the mouth. Depending on the STD, STDS can be transmitted without any signs or symptoms of disease present.

How to Prevent STDs

To help prevent STDs, it is recommend to use condoms. Condoms will greatly reduce your risk of contraction, but STDs can still be spread even with the use of condoms, as diseases like herpes can be contracted by skin-to-skin contact. Condoms must be used properly to be an effective barrier and should be made of latex, as natural skin condoms can still spread viruses. Obviously, the most effective way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases is to avoid sexual activities that include body contact or the exchange of sexual fluids. These types of activities include cybersex and masturbation.

STD Testing

STD testing is an important part of STD prevention. You can get tested for a single STD or a wide range of STDs once. New sexual partners should get tested before engaging in sexual contact. Not all STDs appear right way, and some can be carried with no outward symptoms, which is why testing is an important part of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

STD Treatment

Most STDs are now treatable, and many can be cured. Treatment varies depending on what type of STD you have. Diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can be treated and cured by oral medication. Herpes, which is not curable, can be controlled through regular oral medication as well. Genital warts are generally removed, by freezing or lasers. Protect yourself from STDs by arming yourself with knowledge. Make sure you practice safe sex and get tested for STDs on a regular basis. You don't have to let an STD negatively impact your life.
